Rebecca Therese Wherry Johnson was born in South Carolina, raised in Tennessee, lived in East Texas almost 16 years and now resides in Columbia, TN. She graduated from Freed-Hardeman University with a major in Elementary Education.
When she was in 7th grade, an older lady named Mrs. Edna invited her to help teach Sunday School. Mrs. Edna mentored her, took her to Christian bookstores, bought her very own Sunday school teaching materials (flannel graph) and taught her songs. Since then, Rebecca has taught in Sunday schools, VBS and also in private schools. She is thankful for Mrs. Edna and for her mother and credits these two ladies for teaching her God’s Word and encouraging her to teach young ones.
Rebecca was a stay-at-home mom until widowed. She moved back to TN for family support in raising her young children. She supported herself by subbing in surrounding public and private schools and eventually teaching full-time in private schools. She also earned her TN license for becoming a nurse assistant (her other passion) and worked in nursing for a short while after. Then, God led her back to her greatest joy – teaching. She joined TCA in 2007 and was trained by Heather Van Gorden Watts for 2 years in the classical methodology.
Rebecca enjoys spending time with her children and their spouses, and her two grandsons, Tate and Cash. She enjoys walking, reading, morning devotions and loves being in the country and mountains. She prioritizes her life as such: God, family and friends. Rebecca is a member of Maury Hills Church of Christ.
Her favorite verse is: Deuteronomy 32:2 “Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants.”
Her favorite quote is: “Live simply so others may simply live.” — Ghandi
